The Napa Valley Education Foundation just held its 2nd Annual Leadership Conference on
March 7, 2011 at the Napa Valley Unified School District Education Center.
Student Selection Criteria:
Each NVUSD middle school will identify 10, 7th grade students that are performing at the “basic or above” performance level, have a 2.5 GPA or lower, and display potential leadership qualities in some manner at their school site. This program will help support the “Response to Intervention” model already in place at each middle school by giving students an opportunity to develop leadership qualities with the help of mentoring from local business/community members in a specific field of interest. We are reaching out to a population of students that might normally be underserved.
Teachers recommendations are required to participate and students sign an agreement that they are interested and willing to take on these responsibilities that are being offered to them through the leadership program. A teacher and self-evaluation will judge the following characteristics:
1) Vision/Creativity 2)Good communication skills 3) Assertiveness 4) Integrity/Honesty 5) Sense of Humor 6) Focus/Self-Confidence
Students will be held accountable with a follow-up to the conference by the relationships they build with their mentors, a follow up meeting at each campus with an onsite representative and another conference in the Fall 2010 to evaluate the progress that has been made by the teens.
This experience will: 1) Help students feel more CONNECTED to their school and community and to another non-parent adult. 2) Give the students an opportunity to CONTRIBUTE to their school and community. These are factors that have been shown to increase resiliency and to increase academic achievement in young people.
